Get to Know Me

People call me ZZ. I'm native to Eastern Africa and the island of Zanzibar. I have long wand-like stems with wide, waxy dark green leaves. My roots are actually rhizomes that can hold water for extended periods of time.

Care of me

65 to 90° F. Keep me away from cold drafts, air conditioning or heating vents, and hot surfaces like radiators or furnaces.
TEMPERATURE
Let soil dry out completely between waterings. Water with distilled water or leave tap water sitting out for 24 hours before using to allow chemicals to evaporate.
WATERING
Use a liquid or houseplant fertilizer at half strength. Fertilize me monthly during the spring-summer growing season.
FERTILIZER
If you notice spider mites, mealybugs, or whiteflies, gently wipe them off with a 50/50 mix of soap and water.
POTENTIAL PESTS
Simply remove dry or dead leaves as needed. You can also remove unwanted stalks by cutting at the base of the stalk.
PRUNING
I don't mind being a little rootbound, but repot me when I'm too crowded. Choose a new pot that is 2" wider with plenty of drainage holes.
REPOTTING

I like high humidity, so daily misting is appreciated. I also like to have my soil flooded and allowed to drain once every few months to remove excess fertilizer or chemicals that might build up. Dust my leaves to keep me at my shiny best.

Appearance

Each one of us is unique, so I might not look exactly like the photograph. Embrace me for who I am! When I arrive, gently remove me from the box and introduce me to my new home. Check to make sure my soil is moist after the journey
